Peaceful Sleep

Kindred Words

The familiar cadence of his breath

against her cheek

cold comfort in the dark

his light snore once endearing

now maddening

she stares at his face

chiseled jaw

eyes eerily half open

as if he’s still watching her

even in sleep

wondering how they got to this place

looking for a spark in his blackened heart

a light to guide

finding nothing

but contempt for this murderer

he has killed her self worth

stomped out her dreams

left her broken and bereft

grieving the girl she once was

a single tear rolls down her cheek

as she vows

in the early morning light

to someday find that girl again

to set her free

from the chains

of this sleeping monster

to one day slumber in peace…
